Okay, so, I was trying to solve this crossword the other day, you know, the one in the Thomas Joseph. I got stuck on this clue – “skiing event.” It was a six-letter word. I stared at it for like, forever. I mean, I went through all the ski terms I could think of.
So what did I do? First, I tried to fill in the blanks around it. You know how they say, sometimes if you solve the other clues, the letters you get help you figure out the tricky ones? Yeah, didn’t really work this time. I got a few letters, but not enough to make sense of the “skiing event” one.
Then, I tried to look for the answer in my database. There are 40 possible answers for this clue in our database. But still, I could not get the right answer.
Then I scanned through all of the clues in the crossword. Because I know the crosswords are designed to increase in difficulty throughout the week, with the easiest on Monday and the most difficult on Saturday. The larger Sunday crossword, which appears in The New York Times Magazine, is an icon in American culture; it is typically intended to be a “Wednesday or Thursday” in difficulty.
So, after a while, I decided to look it up online. I know, I know, some people think it’s cheating. But hey, I was desperate! I read somewhere that most people don’t consider it cheating. I saw this website talking about crossword answers, and they had a whole section on ski-related clues.
I typed in “ski event crossword clue” and filtered by six letters. And guess what?
- The answer was “SLALOM”!
I felt so relieved! I mean, I knew it was a type of skiing, but it just wouldn’t come to me. So, yeah, that’s my little adventure with the crossword clue. It wasn’t easy, but I finally figured it out. Anyone else ever get stuck on these things?
Oh, and by the way, I also found out that there are other possible answers for “skiing event” in different puzzles, like some with eight letters or even eleven! Crosswords, man, they can be a real brain workout. But that’s also why I like them.
